Don't let the name put you off — a walk to Hell's Gate, Noosa

Hell's Gate, Noosa — worth every easy step

Some walks sound more dramatic than they are, and Hell's Gate is one of them. The coastal track through Noosa National Park is an easy stroll — about 2.7 kilometres from the park entrance — winding through tea trees, palms and eucalypts before opening up to sweeping views of the coastline stretching from Alexandria Bay to Double Island Point. Good company helps, but honestly the walk does most of the work.

If you time it right, the ocean puts on a show — turtles feeding close to shore, dolphins in the swell, ospreys diving. We could have stayed there for hours.

Did you know?

Hell's Gate was named by explorers Fisher and Thomson in 1883 — most likely after the narrow gorge where waves come crashing in below. There's no cliff barrier at the top, just a 40-metre drop straight down — so maybe the name does make a little sense from that angle. And between July and November, humpback whales migrate past, breaching and surfacing just offshore.
